Our Story

Four Decades Tracing the Colonial World

Founded in 1979 by Edward Holler and Samuel Saunders, Holler & Saunders began as a search for the finest examples of Mexican Colonial furniture and folk art. What started as a personal pursuit grew into one of the most distinctive collections of Spanish Colonial and Latin American decorative arts in the country.

Long before the internet made research effortless, Holler and Saunders traveled Latin America extensively, tracing not only its colonial centers but its trade routes, chief among them the Acapulco–Manila galleon route, which carried goods between Acapulco Bay and Manila Bay once a year from 1585 to 1820. Following that route into the Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese colonies of Asia revealed how deeply those cultures shaped the decorative art of the Americas, and led the pair to seek out colonial pieces with a distinct Asian influence.

A Look Built on Symmetry and Drama

Our pieces are chosen for scale, symmetry, and presence: a sumptuous, exuberant expression of Colonial Revival design that draws equally from Spanish Colonial tradition and the master artisans of Mexico and South America who continue it today.
